Yes you can - at least on the Pen - you can set the record function button to "Backlit LCD" and switch it off. Is this available on the E-M5?

Good question, as I said earlier in the thread I don't have the camera at the moment so can't check. That setting is for use with the VF1, though, which means it would make about as much sense to leave it in the E-M5's menus as it would to leave behind mirror lockup as a hangover from the E-series SLRs...

There absolutely should be an option to turn off the screen and only have the EVF turn on when the eye sensor senses your eye proximity. No one want bright LCD screen in situations like concerts and the like. Blind shooting hopefully also is possible (aim in some general direction towards the stage and fire away).
