Trick: correctly pushing D800 to higher (ISO) limits

Or not so high ISO

I can see it in the shadows at ISO6400 at 1/80. At first I thought it was something in the ambient lighting. But the more I push it, the obvious it becomes.

That's strange. 1/80th is a long way from long exposure. How did that happen?

More to the point -- why can't we invoke black frame subtraction (as in long-exposure noise reduction) at any settings where thermal noise could impinge? It would be a firmware fix using existing LENR routines.

Should I not be seeing this at ISO 6400?
