I used the Nikon 12-24mm on the D200 and D300, then moved to the 14-24mm on my D700 (and ordered D800).

I think the 14-24mm would be a poor investment for DX ... especially since you say your target is photos published in a magazine. That suggests that the size and reproduction quality don't demand a lens of the caliber of the 14-24mm. Any lens of similar capability to the 12-24mm Nikon would be quite adequate for your D90.
