Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 (for a D90)

Just wondering how much wider the 14-24mm is compared to the 17-55 f2.8 (which I already own). Is it minimal or significant? I was originally looking for something even wider than the 14mm, but this lens is so superb I hear--I haven't heard of a wider one of this quality. I'd like it on par with the 17-55. This is mostly for rural or small-town outdoor scenes and places. Some photos will be published in a local magazine.

I've tried out the Sigma 10-20mm f4 and it doesn't impress me enough to invest in. So I'm resigned to spending more $$.

Some people invest their money in land or gold--others in lenses. Any thoughts on how long these lenses will hold their value?
