Also keep in mind canon has been increasing its lens cost across the board. Canon now is equal or more for lenses. The big long primes are now way past nikons costs.

I agree but bear in mind that the long primes are made in runs or batches, not on a constant production system. Costs are recalculated on each batch and as we all know there have been significant currency fluctuations, as well as shortages caused by the Fukushima situation. This has resulted in some of Canon's lens prices rising but you shouldn't assume that Nikon's prices won't follow and close the differential. After all the same events also have affected Nikon.

I never thought of that, Well that isn't encouraging for anyone who wants a new long lens from either company. Sigma needs a new 500 F4 IS lens as there new 120-300 is quite good from examples i have seen online. I mean really $9500 for canons new 500 F4 if it ever comes out is crazy high in price. my 2008 car was only 16 grand.

Yes something like a 500/4.0 does seem crazily expensive when you compare it to the cost of a car. But the difference is that the 500/4.0 is virtually hand made by a small number of extremely skilled people and in very small quantities and cars are manufactured in thousands, if not even hundreds of thousands, for many models.

In some ways it's more like buying an expensive watch and it's easy to spend $10,000 on one of those, even without it containing any precious metals or jewels.

If you already have a long lens then look after it - they aren't going to come down in price.
