Re: WCON / xz-1

I know this is an old thread, but I have news to share. I just bought an XZ-1, and the Olympus adapter tube. I own the C-5050 and have both the WCON-07 and TCON-17 adapters for that camera. Both do mount on the C-5050 using the same Oly adapter tube. The lens design, however, was such that it extended all the way out for both wide angle and tele extremes. The XZ-1 lens doesn't work the same way - it sticks out further for the tele end, but not as far out for the wide end. This is why the old WCON-07 doesn't officially work.

I say "officially" because since there was no danger of the lens bumping the adapter, I went ahead and tried it. There is vignetting at the corners, as would be expected. BUT, if you flick the zoom in 3 times, you're at 7.4mm and there's no vignetting. 7.4 x 0.7 = 5.18mm, which is less than 6mm.... the conversion factor is 4.66, and so 5.18 x 4.66 = 24.14mm.

So, using the WCON-07 lens is safe, and will get you down to roughly 24mm equiv. You just have to be willing to fiddle with the zoom to be sure you're in the right place to get the most out of it. May not be worth it for some, but I'll enjoy having the option at least. I only did a quick test and don't have an image I want to post yet, but I'll post something soon to show the difference.
