What makes a picture a photo?

Regulars on here know I'm still learning composition with photography all self-taught, as I won't be able to do a photography class until Fall at the earliest.

I know things like following the rules of thirds helps to make a picture feel right, but I don't know why this picture I took the other day with the NEX-7 and Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E-series has gotten so much praise from friends of mine. It's even set to possibly win a photo competition. Can anyone help me out here? Is it because of the natural composition of orange and blue? Or how somehow only the left flowers are in focus with the sunset in the background?
