Which affordable macro lens for taking pics of watch dials, small objects, etc?

A late suggestion

Sorry to come late to the discussion, but I only just noticed this thread. Since you mentioned the word "affordable," I wondered why you are not considering a close-up lens attachment for one of your current lenses. Something like a Canon 500D (for the 16-85) or a 250D (for the 50mm). I use a Canon 500D with my 70-200, or a set of close-up lenses (+1, +2, and +3 diopters) on my 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2, and get pretty good results. Here's a recent watch example:

As I recall, the shot of the works was done with the 70-200 and Canon 500D, and the shot of the whole watch was with the 35mm f/2 and a couple of the close-up filters stacked. The story behind that montage can be found on my blog (address below).
