70-300L=best lens for Kindergarten Dad?

I see a lot "walk around" threads, but those tend to be landscape folks and I'm specifically interested in kid-focused usage by the photo-enthusiast parents out there.

As my twins are beginning to start playing soccer, dance recitals, etc. I'm upgrading to FF from my 40D and also looking for a lens w/ longer reach.

So far my thoughts are:

  • IS is highly desired

  • 70-200L 2.8 IS = too heavy (wife won't use it I'm sure) and too expensive

  • 70-200L f/4 IS = very interesting

  • 70-300L f/4-5.6 = best?

My question is really between the last two. I assume that I'm not giving up much aperture because the 5.6 is at the long end where the 200 lens doesn't even exist. Am I thinking right there?

Is there a large IQ dropoff at the 70-150 range for the 300? I'm stuck because I'm sure many of my shots will be in that range, but then it would sure be nice to have the extra range when needed (recitals, soccer, etc.)

Anyone pondered this? Advice for me?

PS: my other lens is the 24-105L & 50 f/1.4

Canon EOS 40D
