Deep Red Fringe

Took a few pictures with my T1i and 18-55mm lens before I realized that there is often a deep red fringe on items with the sky as a background. I do not focus on the sky. I focus on the subject below sky level, but some tree limbs against the sky have the red fringe on one side. Is this a common problem with the otherwise great 18-55mm lens or is it something else? Thanks for all help.
