Wow, Voigtlander 25mm 0.95 is an awesome lens for videos

I finally took the plunge and bought the Voigtlander 25mm 0.95.

  • All metal, smooth focus ring, big glass, well built.... wow!!!

  • It is smaller than I expected but it is heavy. However, for some reason, it feels so natural in my hand.

I took some videos of my family after dinner. The lens produces very bright image in low light compared to my Panasonic 20mm 1.7. I bought this lens to take videos so I am very happy that I bought this lens. Now I need to get a GH3 when it comes out. With GH3, I am sure the the lens will become even more useful in low light. I unfortunately have a GH1.

I also took some photos. At wide open, CA is pronounced. However, CA is much more controlled than my Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 at wide open. However, Voigtlander 25mm is very usable at wide open regardless of the CA.

1. Cropped photo - don't remember the f value but it is not 0.95

2. At wide open. Unfortunately, you can see some light reflecting within the lens but the noise is very minimal. A bit disappointing...

1. Not so useful for taking photos of fast moving objects / kids.

2. Very heavy. I usually carry 2 or three extra lenses so my bag will be much heavier.
3. Pronounced CA at wide open but its 0.95 lens!
4. No Auto Focus

1. Very useful in taking videos of kids as this lens is a manual focus lens. I feel that I have more control over the focus when taking videos. The thin DOF produces magical effects when taking videos.
2. Amazing brightness when taking videos.
3. Can take handheld photos in low light.

4. Produces amazingly sharp photos from f1.4+ (I think it is quite sharp even at wide open)

Using this lens made me realize that if this was a full frame lens, the DOF may be too thin at wide open making it very difficult to take family photos I usually take. I think the level of DOF is very good for my use.

I also bought a ND16 filter. I look forward to taking videos and photos during day time. I cannot wait until this weekend.

The lens was expensive but so far, I love this lens.
