Sorry, but Thomas Jefferson didn't say that

I thought "mental attitude" was a surprising term for a man of Jefferson's era; it sounds more like maybe 1930s or later.

I did a quick search and it turns out Thomas Jefferson never said that. It does not appear in any of his writings. The earliest attribution is from 1948:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the quote just didn't seem to fit the Thomas Jefferson I've read about.
