SZ-30MR Volvo Ocean Race - Leg 5

Saturday was fine, and the six Volvo Ocean Race yachts did a harbour race in the afternoon. But I did some administration, which turned out to be required this Monday morning.

But on Sunday I made a point of nothing coming between me and recording the departure for Brazil of the six yachts in the Volvo Ocean Race 2012.

The weather was turning sour, and for best visibility the best viewing point turned out to be the Queens Parade water front, five minutes walk from our home. This meant, I did not get all the six yachts lined up for the actual start, but here are CAMPER, Abu Dhabi and Groupama on the first of two passes -

There was constant clatter of a media helicopter -

But TV1 only featured a gossiper at the Volvo Ocean Race base in the Six o'Clock News. Regardless of what the subject is, 90% of the 'news' we get is just plain gossip.

Here is another nice grouping of Abu Dhabi, Telefonica, CAMPER and PUMA -

This leaves Sanya, which I caught on the second and final pass out -

1600x1200 renditions are found by clicking on 'original' in the captions of the pictures at this link -

I used the SZ-30MR on a tripod due to the long zoom settings. Once they spread out, I could find individual yachts simply by panning. The processing involved considerable expansion of the dynamic range to compensate for the misty visibility.

The stills were taken during the video clips, which is a feature of the SZ-30MR I get to like a lot. The edit oif my takes again give more detail than the stills do -

This edit also had processing - raising gamma to 3 and contrast to 3 and more red and green with less blue in AVS Video Converter.

I am beginning to feel that the SZ-30MR is a seriously underrated camera. There is no GPS sucking the battery dry, its charge lasted for the whole event. Not having to stop a video for a couple of stills vastly reduces the conflict of priority between still and video. The 'excessive' pre-processing often salvages a difficult situation, and the start of leg 5 in the Volvo (round-the-world) Ocean Race did pose some challenges.
