question about soft proofing

Hi all,
for better result in print I would use the softproof in Photoshop.

This is my method:
In Photoshop CS5 go to View > Proof Setup > Custom

Select the ICC profile from the list (downloaded from my lab)
"Preserve RGB Numbers" off

I use 'Relative Colorimetric' or 'Perceptual' and check "Black Point Compensation", in the "Display Options" check 'simulate paper colour'

Now I will see a big drop in contrast when I turn on soft-proofing (especially after I check the 'Simulate Paper Color' box) so I need to fix the photo with Hue/Saturation, Curves...

Once I am happy with my file, I can save it with the ICC profile (convert to profile).

Go to 'Edit> Convert to Profile' and select my chosen profile. But at this point
the picture brightness increases: is it normal??
