I had a similar experience, the difference being I owned a J1. I tired it every which way but just was not satisfied with the output. I tried JPEG and RAW, wih RAW being processed in Lightroom 3. The color wasn't "punchy" enough and the close ups looked smeared. And I'm not talking about 100% crops either. But it's focus was phenomenal.
Eventually I gave up and sold it. I've used money from that sale to get a G1X. So far I am pleased with the new Canon and will continue to test it. I need a great portable camera for when we go out west to Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon and Disneyland here in 3 months.
If you're going to go to Disneyland you should set some time aside to travel down my way. Visit point lobos just south of Carmel. We also have Pacific Grove, Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Cruz and the entire coast is absolutley beautiful in this area and has much to photograph.
