But there are two ways of doing it.

  1. You try to treat the problem with color management in mind. Then you have to find the correct transform to make the RGB output channels as equivalent to RGB channels as possible. This is the academic method. It might fail if the original color space is not possible to convert. But if it is possible, at least with some measurable error, then its the right way to go IMHO.

  2. You try to tweak the 3D LUT until it looks good. And when you find problems, you change the tweaking to fix yet another color problem. And this you have to do for every new camera you make. Hard labour and difficult. If it fails or not you never know. Or rather, its a matter of definition. It succeeds if the camera sells or no one complains any more. It looks like Sigma/Foveon have chosen this path.
