When my camera is in P, S, A or M modes, I am unable to set any exposure settings -- aperture, shutter speed, ISO, or exposure compensation. What's up with that?? For some reason I seem to be locked out from being able to change anything. Can anyone offer any insight into why this is happening?

hold down the Function button until the wheels are unlocked...

might be that.

You can turn that feature off in the menu, forget what its called though.. something about wheel.

That did the trick. Thank you! Apparently my wife did that inadvertently. She used the camera for the first time and was pressing the navigation button thinking it was the shutter release.

So what's the purpose of locking everything? When would you want to do that?

I'm not sure to be honest.... I stumbled across it by accident the first day playing with the NEX7, made a note of it and then saw how you can turn it off in the menu..

I can't think of a use for it, other than if you wanted it to go Full Auto, and hand it to someone else. It would prevent them messing up any of teh controls by chance.

ah shucks.. should have read this thread earlier.

I got into the same situation a week ago. All locked up. Didnt have the manual with me..no idea what is going on.

so I reset everything to default in camera, solve the problem & also give me extra work to set things back again..

The reason for the option is that you won't move the controls by accident. It is in the Setup Menu under Dial/wheel Lock. It gives you the option to lock all three or just the control wheel.I did find I sometimes moved the exposure compensation dial by accident so I use the feature. Now if they would just put a lock on the video button. There are a lot of features to learn on this camera and I am liking it more and more.

I know a lot of people complain that they activate video recording accidentally, but in one week of shooting with the NEX-7, I've done that only once, on the first day. HOWEVER, I have inadvertently changed the exposure compensation a hundred times! I'm not quite sure how that is happening, but it is very aggravating. Perhaps I'm doing it when I want to change ISO with the control wheel. So, if the control wheel can be locked, that might solve the + - problem for me. Since that wheel will be locked, hopefully I won't need to use any of the other control wheel functions too often which would make this solution impractical. But sounds good so far. Will have to try it.

Thank you for the additional information iJer.
