Reality check

I saw a selection of Sebastiao Salgado's Amazon series prints the other day - the average size is maybe 4' x 5'. I understand his process is to shoot on a 1D Mark IV, convert in digital post to b/w (prob. has someone to do that for him), then the finished file gets output to 4' x5" silver-based film using a film recorder. That film is then printed in the traditional way.

So to re-cap: effective 13.4 MP. Printed 4' x 5'.

These are some of the most stunning, dramatic, majestic landscapes you will ever see, capturing the enormous scale and beauty of this part of the world. Photographs which will last the test of time.

13.4 MP.

I am saying no-one ever should use more than that because that's what's he's used for this series ? No. What I am saying is let's keep a sense of perspective.

Canon EOS-1D Mark IV Pentax X-5
