A debate over lens specifications leads to confusion...

I was comfortable with my knowledge of DSLR lenses until a debate erupted at my local photography club. Does anyone care to comment on this summarized statement?

A wide angle lens with a constant, large aperture (say f/4) offers more value for a landscape photographer because the constant aperture is an indication of a “higher quality” lens. The aperture value itself offers less value for a landscape photographer because the wide aperture is seldom used (due to the shallow depth of field.)
