Hello there,

I was trying to "kill" the ambient light (and illuminate my subject by flash) but I was unable to do this at my max sync speed which is 1/250 (Using a D300).

Shooting on a very dull and overcast day will generally do it.

The light will be about 3 stops lower in intensity in "cloudy dull" conditions. 3 stops dimmer in daylight is the same as making your flash 8x times more powerful....or the same as having eight flashes instead of only one.

But if you wait 'till DUSK on a "cloudy dull" kind of day, your flah will "gain" another stop by comparison with the ambient, effectively making it 16x more powerful than it is in sunshine .....

... more like how it is indoors, in fact.
