P7100 - seeking advice re using raw

Example of RAW recovery versus JPEG

These pictures are not great by any means (I was testing the "Smile Timer"). I had the camera set for Fine JPEG + RAW. Note the uneven lighting causes the highlights to be blown around the lamp and the painting. The lighting is from a combination of flash, CFL, and standard fluorescent lamps which didn't quite work right with Auto white balance. The JPEG is first:

I recovered highlights and corrected the WB (using my tee shirt as the white reference). I use Apple Aperture.

For pictures that came out correctly, the JPEGs were just fine, although I was able to tweak the RAWs to be slightly better. I've taken about 100 test shots, will spend more time with it on a weekend vacation coming up, where I'll also compare to my D300s (OK, probably not a fair comparison, but the P7100 is sure lighter to carry!)
