Does LR4 softproofing mean no monitor calibration?

I was in the process of deciding on getting a monitor calibrator (just trying to decide which!! It's a bit complicated..) when I read the review of LR4 on dpreview. If I can load a printer / paper profile, and then adjust my photo to how that will look compared to my display, before sending it off to be printed, has this removed the need for monitor calibration? I'm sorry if this appears naive but I'm stilll trying to get my head around this colour management deal. Any views or advice welcomed. I have a Dell 2209WA and suffer the apparently usual problem of prints too dark compared to the display. Thanks in advance John
