Hi people =)

I have the Canon Speedlight 420ex and I would like to know if , with 550ex I can have faster shutter speeds in High Sync mode... (I shoot concerts, so I have very low light situations)

Thanks for all the replies hope you understand my question =)

Hi Roberto,

I believe all EX-series flashes are capable of flashing up to the max shutter speed on Type-A bodies (not sure if they could go up to 1/16000 like in the case of the 1D though but I guess it should).

However, in HSS mode you lose a lot of distance (GN) because the flash is essentially pulsing at a high speed to match the shutter. I believe the EX-series flashes' manuals have a table to indicate working distance in normal and HSS modes. Given the scenario you presented I think the only advantage the 550EX has over the 420EX would be the slightly higher GN and nothing more.

In your question you mentioned using HSS in low light concert shooting. Is there a specific flash effect you're after? IMO you'd have to be pretty close to the stage if you wanted to use HSS in low light. Sounds interesting though, care to elaborate?

Cheers,
GregY

The 550ex will offer you 60% faster shutter speed in HSS mode over the 420ex. Nice for outdoor portaits.
