So i went for the Tamron and am very happy with it. Damn sight heavier than the package canon lens (18-55). However I have quickly realised that I will need a flashgun due to the shadow created from the lens! v.low budget, can anyone recommend a non canon cheapskate that will do the job in small rooms (such as bathrooms)

Congrats on the new lens! I hope that it works well for you!

The cheapest flashes are made by Yongnuo. Here are a couple of reviews: http://speedlights.net/2010/12/10/yongnuo-yn460-ii/

If you are looking to use the flash directly forward at 10 mm with the new lens, this may be a problem. Check the reviews closely for the maximum wide angle coverage. Of course, if you can bounce off the ceiling or a wall, that should solve the problem. I think that both of these flashes will rotate and tilt sufficiently. Check out the list of reviews on the right side of the page for more choices.

Good luck!

When you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!
