Re: Canon Elph 310 HS vs Canon S100

The 310HS has one advantage over the S100, and that's its longer telephoto, the equivalent of 224mm vs. 120mm. It's also slightly smaller, and, of course, half the price.

But the S100 is better in low light with an aperture of 2.0 vs. 3.0 on the 310HS. It also has a wider lens, 24mm vs. 28mm on the 310, important for landscapes and so forth. And the S100 uses Canon's new DIGIC 5 processor rather then the older DIGIC 4, and it offers greater control over the shutter speed and aperture.

I therefore think that the S100 is the "better" camera, meaning it will allow you to take better photos in more situations than the 310HS will (assuming you understand how to use the controls and have the patience to do so), especially in low light.

But if cost and/or greater telephoto are important, the 310 is a very good camera.
