Yep. Yet another thread about them. Let's collect all the info in one place.

Which lenses do you think are up to the job for SD1? And which are not?

Non-sigmas are welcome too, but let's at least sort out mighty sigmas!

I've used two on my SD1 so far:

17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM is nice, but softens near the edges. There might be very slight vignetting at the 50mm focal length too, but only at the corners.

85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is excellent. No complaints here!

The macro primes are all good across the frame.

The 17-50 has an extremely sharp center, but weak edges unless you use the 35-50mm range and stop down to the f5.6. The 24-70 will give you very good edge performance but is much heavier if you can live with that. Also needs to be stopped down, sadly.

Other than that, I can recommend the 8-16 for superwide and the 70-200 for tele.

None of the Sigma lenses will give you good edges wide open, although many will give you a great center. This shouldn't be much of a problem, since for landscapes you would be stopping down usually.

No practical experience yet but from what I can gather from load o research...

10 Fish
8-16
17-50 with edge caveat
17-70 from 20 to 50 probably
24-70 (the new one) mucho dollars
50-150 if you can find it
70-200 (the new one)
100-300 f4
50,70,105, 150 and the new 180 macros.

The micro focus adjustment should help to dial in the longer ones.
So glad Sigma put micro focus on the SD1 - great move!

The new 120-300mm F2.8 OS has recieved many endorsements, do you think it belongs on the list too (I don't have an SD1 or experience with this lens at all)?

The lack of a suitable wide angle lens (one with filter threads, at least) is conspicuous.

Needed: A 10-20 or 10-24mm that can keep up with the SD1.

Well, when the time comes that I might get one of these I reckon that I will want just the best macro lens that Sigma makes. I want it to - and now here's the go - be able to reproduce 1:1.

In terms of crop sensors I'm wondering what this means. Is it:

1. Subject (say size is 1) just fits the crop sensor (image reduced to 0.63 size on SD1)

or does it mean

2. Subject size is the same as image and I only see part (63%) of it on sensor?

Anyway, what macro lenses should I start to look at?

Hi atom14: Based on my limited experience with the SD1, I would say the 70 mm macro is a can't miss for a first lens. It will match the resolution of the SD1 quite nicely.
Look at the detail in this shot:

Ps. click on the photo when it appears in the window and it will display original size (quite amazing).

Ta, Larry. It sure is sharp all over. Have you tried really close up stuff with it?
Do you know if it can do 1:1?

I will look it up on the Sigma site.
atom14.

Edit: I just did. It sounds promising, and it can do 1:1. Since it is "designed for full frame cameras" that means that the image on a crop sensor will be "even bigger" (don't worry, used advisedly :)).

It means the subject is reproduced on the sensor surface at exactly life size - 1:1.

The size of the sensor has no influence other than to enable even larger magnifications before eventually running out of sensor space, or else not enabling 1:1 because the sensor is too small for the subject.
The reproduction ratio is also limited by what the lens is designed to do.
Only a true macro lens can do 1:1

Thanks for the clarification, Rawmeister. It's what I thought too, but in this day of so many facts and figures...

The lenses that can be used wide open are:
70mm F2.8 macro

150mm F2.8 macro (not sure about OS version as despite the MTF improvement, the tests performed so far show a deterioration in performance)
120-300mm F2.8

There will be some improvement after stopping down 1 to 2 stops, even in these stellar performers.

Sigma need a new version of the 20mm F1.8 with FLD glass or new coatings (HSM would be nice to). It is sharp but has lots of CA but needs to be stopped down.
The 50mm F2.8 is great stopped down, as are the 50mm F1.4 and the 85mm F1.4.

Sigma really needs an OS standard zoom that has better edge sharpness. I hoped the newish 17-50mm was that lens but every example I have seen is soft in the outer regions. I would have thought it would be easier to manufacture such a lens for a crop sensor than it would be for FF. Even if they charged $1500 for a constant F2.8 super sharp regular OS zoom, SD1 owners would probably jump at it.

Hope this helps.

I'm also considering to by the Sigma SD1M, but have big trouble deciding what lenses to but for it.

I have no SA-mount lenses in my bag (just Oly 43-equipment), and I'm in the process of considerig a swap to SD1M when the price now changed. Sigma (Foveon) because of the beautiful colors and detail (I like strong colors!), and because I think I'm capable to manage the "PC work" with the raw-files after shooting. Other options are Canon 5D MkIII (higher price), or wait forever for the Oly E7. And for the record - I only wan't to take nice pictures, video is just a feature I don't need. I have a helmet/action cam (Contour+) for that :)

If you experienced SD1 users should buy lenses from scratch - what 4 lenses would you chooose? I find it a bit difficult to summarize from all these discussions :) And since the body is "splash proof", does any of the leses fit that description?

I do landscape (high mountains/randonne) and macro as pri 1, but also people/portrait to some extent (becoming an uncle for two this spring), and some occasional travel and wildlife. Do I need 3, 4 or maybe 6? Feel free to send me a pm if you have experience to share. Guessing I can do my self - or read about on the web :)

And for the record: maybe there are new lenses coming this year - or the next - that are worth the wait? Any thoughts on this?

Nils,

The lenses that work well are:

All the macro lenses
8-16
24-70 HSM
70-200 2.8 ex
120-300

The four I would buy would be:

8-16 ( if you need to go that wide)
24-70
70mm Macro
120-400 if you want to save money
120-300 if money is no object

Just curious, why the 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM and not the 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM? And no F1.4 prime?

How about the Sigma 12-24mm, has anyone tried it and have photos?

I just bought a used Sigma 12-24mm in Canon mount, took some first photos yesterday with the full-frame Canon 5DII and posted some @ 12mm and @ 24mm online. See my flickr link below. On the 5DII, the center seems very sharp, with wide-angle distortion of course in the corners. Of course on the SD1, it would be a different 35mm equivalent.... what's the SD1? a 1.6x or 1.5x? (instead of the earlier SD/DP 1.7x) And it's a 'special effects' type lens, for sure.

When we get together in Washington, I have a 17-35mmEX for people to try on the SD1 (I don't have a 12-24mm in Sigma mount, just the older 10-20mm and the 17-35 for wide-angle).

Best regards, Sandy

The SD1 is 1.5x crop, different from the earlier SD's with the old sensor (1.7x) crop.

The newest 12-24 is "splash proof" (and has internal focusing?), and that's good. But no option for filters? Is that smart for such (wide angle) lens?
