atypical "multidisciplinary" photo student needs career advice

I think a solid foundation in being able to handle product photography will be what the average A/V director would be looking for, much more so than an eagerness/aptitude for technical aspects.

Not to try and deflate your bubble, but while I think there are job options that would fit your desires, I don't think there is a big niche for photographer/technicians. The A/V director may come to appreciate your technical inclination over time, but will hire you for your ability to light and shoot products similar to what the company sells.

Or put another way, at my job, the A/V guys and industrial design guys appreciate my understanding of photography/lighting/composition, but my boss rewards me for my engineering capabilities.
