G1 X counterpoint.

I have had my G1 X a day and wanted to share some thoughts which might be useful to those still on the fence.

My G1 X is replacing an S90. I almost bought an S100 last year but didn't as I waited to see what the Fuji X10 would bring. As that turned out to be pain I skipped the Fuji but gripped by the big sensor bug looked at a range of options until deciding on the G1 X. Other camera's considered were the NEX-7 and Nikon 1.

Things I like.

1. The size. I'm over 6'3" and the grip sits well in my hand. I can access the buttons easily.

2. The Video. A sensor this size is a clear sep up from a phone in a way smaller sensors (and SD) isn't. It's actually worth using the G1X to shoot video over a phone thanks to its quality. Without that video-modes in compacts are mostly redundant nowadays.

3. The battery life. I have two batteries but have yet to move the graphic on the first one. Impressive.

4. The quality. Leagues beyond the S90 and what I've seen of the S100. Better than anything bar a DSLR really.

5. The lens. The lens lets in plenty of light and combined with the ISO capability shooting indoors is easy. I'm exposing to the left to keep highlights in check but the file quality means recovering deliberate under-exposures is easy.

Things I'm not so keen on.

1. The viewfinder. Useless. Literally a waste of space.

2. The weight. Even for a guy my size this thing's heavy and hard to use one-handed for long periods. This surprised me.
3. The lens cap. I'm sure there's a better solution. It's a pain to remove.

4. The speed. There is no speed. Given the Nikon 1, 10+ frames a second should be the baseline in this segment. Nikon deliver 60 for goodness sake.
5. No GPS. Inexcusable.
