I just purchased a 70-200 vr2 and a 1.7tc and have been doing a comparison with my 70-300 vr. So far I'd say, if you have enough light to stop down the 70-300 even a little, you'll get sharper images than with the 70-200 + tc1.7. I'm looking to switch to a tc1.4 for that reason.

Not really surprising to me. The TC14EII is all I would ever consider using on the 70-200VR, as good as that lens is. I've seen plenty of examples of "supposedly" excellent shots with the 70-200VRII using the TC20EIII for example, but I just don't have the courage to tell the OP what I really think...and it isn't positive. I'm constantly amazed that people still expect way too much from TC's in most cases.

Thanks for posting.

Oh, to the OP....I'd choose the 70-200VR+TC14EII in a heartbeat. Like it or not, pro glass is what you're going to need in the future with the new crop of high MP cameras.
