When I got my first digital camera in 2001 I considered the video option a complete gimmick. And as it was silent, very low quality and only about a minute in length I think I was correct.

Now with my current D5100 which gives HD movies with stereo sound and up to 20 mins record I am very pleased to have that as an additional option. To me the only area where it still falls down is focusing and sometimes composition using the LCD screen. With my very average short sighted eyesight and quite often strong reflections on the screen you end up not seeing anything. So the need to perhaps add a loupe and even a follow-focus seems almost essential if not a little Heath Robinson!! Short of having a EVF I cannot see that changing.
