FZ150 vs. Canon 7D at the rodeo

There's been a lot of very positive user reviews of the FZ150 in this forum and elsewhere ... and I also have been very impressed.

But some have been wondering how the FZ150 will perform under very challenging conditions such as birds in flight. Or how about very high contrast circumstances, and with rapidly moving subjects requiring fast AF and shot to shot times?

Might the FZ 150 really be a substitute for a DSLR?

Yesterday I tried to test this by comparing the FZ150 with my Canon 7D at a rodeo in Las Cruces, NM. Conditions were pretty challenging -- too bright at midday with very sharp light contrasts combined with very fast moving horses at a distance of 75-150 feet. Both cameras struggled, but overall how did they compare?

Here's my assessment of the two cameras. Though I do have some previous experience at shooting rodeos, you'll quickly see that I am not a professional (so please refrain from bashing my lack of skill and take the comparison for what it is) .

There's also some other (Canon 7D) rodeo photos on Pbase, if interested, with better light and better quality at: http://www.pbase.com/tconelly/rodeo and http://www.pbase.com/tconelly/rodeo_barrel_racing_2011
