Sorry for breaking like this into your forum, but I just read a lot about the X10 white orb problem and I tried to put also my camera (Olympus SP-810UZ) to test. Being a rather cloudy day, when the Sun appeared I hurried to the only reflexion point at hand, i.e. a car on the street. I took three shots: at W end (24mm), in between, and at T end (36X optical zoom - 864mm). The shots are straight from the camera, only downsized to 1600X1200:

What do you think?

Thank you for watching and happy shooting everybody,

Augustin

I believe it's general consensus already that no other camera produces 'orbs' like the X10. And yes, I own an X10 and I'm very happy with it.

  1. It's a nice town you live in!
  2. The SP-810UZ lens is surprisingly good at its extremes. Lots of in-camera correction must be going on at the 24mm end, but the loss of quality at the borders is minimal.
  3. No, no orbs here in the 3rd photo, you can see information that wasn’t ORBliterated under the white blotch...

...and, adjusting it a bit, it becomes more clear that this is ordinary blooming (remember it's the sun reflected off a convex surface!) plus a fairly well controlled lens flare:

All in all, this Olympus superzoom is surely a sleeper!

Very nice photos, Augustin.
With that monster zoom, you can see what the whole neighbourhood is up to ;)
I hope you are using your special zoom powers for the good of mankind :)

Maybe Olympus should team up with Fuji.. Fujipus!

I think you are looking for Eskimos in the Sahara. Look for them in the right land...

ps If you see someone without a smile on, give him one of yours... :)

Thank you for your comment! I think it's very good that we both are happy with our cameras, I also because I don't have the white orb problem. I should say however that our cameras are not in the same class: considering all the features (sensor size, controls, shutter speed, etc.) mine is like a toy compared with yours and therefore it cost a little more than half the price of yours. Also as far as I know the problem in discussion affects all types of cameras with the same sensor.

Happy shooting,

Augustin

That was nice! :)

But with all the recent scandals plaguing Olympus, some Eskimos could come trying to sell sand in Sahara! :)

All the best,

Augustin

Thank you very much not only for the comment, but also for the enhancement of my shot! Actually I'm just a hobbyist and knowing almost nothing about PP, I didn't want to alter the conclusion of professionals... I'm happy you like my camera and I would be very pleased if you could take some time to see my tests here:

Finally, some words about my hometown: Cluj-Kolozsvar-Klausenburg (it has three names: in Romanian, Hungarian and German since all had a contribution in developing it) is a town in the heart of the province of Transylvania-Erdely-Siebenbuergen, in the Eastern Europe. Our main proud is the several centuries of ethnic and religious tolerance and understanding.

Here is a shot of a part of Cluj, taken from a small plane flying us (my wife and I) home an year ago from Prague, via Budapest, with the SP-800UZ, the predecesor of my present camera:

Thanks again and happy shooting,

Augustin

As always, the most spirited comment :) thank you!

With my zoom powers :) I'm now trying to shoot some magpies, but the damn birds are so wary and intelligent that even if they are stayng like stones, when I'm taking hold of my camera (something new, thus probably harmfull) they fly on the double!

All the best,

Augustin

Thank you for the kind invitation. Maybe you were only testing a camera, but for me it felt like having a nice stroll through Cluj!

Not the best test but thanks :)
