I don't think it is a joke. It does have uses. I have a G3 so, when I set the resolution to 8mp, I get the equivalent of a 1.4 tele converter.

Where it becomes useful compared to cropping in the computer is seeing and focusing on what you want to get.

Example, when I go deer hunting, it is easier to separate the deer from the grass with the tele conv ON and, therefore, being able to focus on it. If cropping, you usually find that you have focused on the grass.

The way I look at it is if I use an optical 1.4 TC I lose some optical quality and 1.4 stops of light.

If I use the G3's 1.4, I only lose resolution. 8mp is still pretty good.
