Speedlite for Canon G1X

Just a quick question: I'll be receiving a G1X as soon as B&H starts shipping, and am considering buying a flash to go with it. I'll primarily be taking pictures of people indoors, occasionally with poor lighting. I pretty much always use a tripod. I usually end up taking somewhere between 200-400 pictures at a time. I'm absolutely not a professional in any way, but I do like to try to take a decent picture.

The G12 I recently sold seemed to have a more-or-less sufficient flash for what I was doing, but after a number of shots the recycle time was sooo slow...

Would the 270EX II be a decent choice, or should I go for something like a 430EX II? The larger flash looks as though it'd be ridiculously huge on the G1X, but I don't want to buy the 270 if it'd be a waste of money...

Do I even need an external flash for what I'm trying to do, or do I simply need to become a better photographer?

Thanks in advance for your input!
