Canon 7D vs Canon 5D Mark II

There has been a huge debate about this comparison. Full frame vs. crop censor. Here is my take and you can agree or discard it as you see fit.

First off, I own and use both cameras using the lenses below:

7D I have shot with the Canon 18-135mm, 50mm 1.8, 28mm F2, 28-200mm IS, 28-135mm, 70-200mm f4 IS, and the 17-55mm 2.8 IS.

5D Mark II with the 50mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 35mm f2, 24-105mm IS, 28-135mm IS and 70-200 f4 IS.

The Canon 5D Mark II is way sharper at every ISO at 100% pixel level. It has a ton more play when shot in RAW when it comes to exposure i.e. shadows and highlights. If you are a 100% pixel peeper, then the the Mark II kit with the 24-105mm lens kit is your buy. I can't attest to the 24-70mm 2.8 lens but I hear it's pretty close to the 24-105mm lens.

The Canon 7D is very particular to the lens and aperture you use. It's pixel pinch demands the best of ever lens. I shoot with the 17-55mm lens almost primarily and it outshines all zoom lens except the 70-200mm. Even at ISO 100 there is noise at 100% pixel level, regardless of the lens and lighting.

The Canon 7D is not for pixel peepers, but for the photographer. Here is my simple review, the 7D is a more "fun" camera to photograph with. Not just became of all it's extra electroic toys, but because of it's build. It feels better in your hands. It's as simple as that. Matted with the 17-55mm 2.8 IS lens, it is in my option the perfect photographic tool to date. It is a pleasure to hold, use, pre vision with, and photograph with then the Canon 5D Mark II with any lens. I'm not simply talking about price (which, the 7D and 17-55 lens wins by far) but the feel of the camera is amazing. The button placements, the grip, the weight, the menu, the built in flash, the on/off all feels right.

Now if Canon makes a Canon 5D Mark III with the IQ and feel of the 7D I'll order it right away....that is if it's at 35+ megapixels. At that extreme, all Canon lenses will be made irrelevant and I'll have to spend a fortune on hard drives, memory cards and Zeiss prime lenses.
