16-35 is the sharpest Nikon lens...

for what I'd want to use it for.... according to photozone...

I've been paining over which landscape lens to get for the D800E... and I do want to make the most of the 36MP so lens resolution is important to me.. I know there are other factors in a lens also...

The problem I have with the 14-24 is the fact that I don't think I'll want to go below 20mm.. and I cant use filters easily.

The 24/1.4 is nice as are the zeiss 21 and 25.

But when I look at the MTF charts on photozone.de it seems that the very versatile 16-35 might be just as sharp or sharper for what I'd be using it for anyway? IE 21-28mm @ F8. Apparenlty its a little weak at both ends but this wouldn't bother me too much.

See below figures copied from photozone (centre/edge/corner mtf)

Nikon 16-35 @ 21/8 3702/3267/3098

Nikon 16-35 @ 28/8 3597/3251/3088

Nikon 24/1.4 @ F8 3701/3129/3174

Nikon 14-24 @ 21/8 3653/3177/3082

Nikon 14-24 @ 24/8 3636/3228/3050

I was seriously considering a zeiss 21 and 25 - but the 16-35 covers these focal lengths beautifully it seems and would be less than one third of the cost of these two? And its all in one lense that can take filters etc?

I know it has a little CA etc compared to some of the others.. but is there anything else I'm missing or getting wrong here?
