36mp are not off strategy
There has been a lot of debate if Nikon had lost its mind, and the "sensible" pixel size approach, to enter the mad pixel race.
We should, however look at technology developments, and with concrete examples.
Let's look at history:
1999 D1 2.6 mp $5500 AF 5 points
2006 D2Xs 12.2 mp $4000 AF 11 points
2012 D800 36 mp $3000 AF 51 points
Sensor size evolution 1999 - 2006: 5x
Sensor size evolution 2006 - 2012: 3x (and FX)
AF evolution 1999 - 2006: 5x
AF evolution 2006 - 2012: 5x
Price evolution 1999 - 2006: down 27%
Price evolution 2006 - 2012: down 25%
The only parameter not to evolve is CH speed where the D800 just about equals the D1.
I guess that we have to wait for Expeed 4 processing power to address this issue, perhaps not very significant for many (like D700 owners, satisfied with 5 FPS).
