Wildlife photography with a fixed lense?

I need some help from wildlife photographers.

I am doing a 10 day Namibia/Botswana trip in May and am trying to work out what lenses to take.

I intend to hire another camera (both DX) - carry a 18-200 on one camera and either the 70-300mm or the 300 mm D/F4 with a 1.4 TC on the other - effectively 420/5.6.

I am worried that the 300 is not sufficiently long - has anyone used a fixed lense to take wildlide pictures and if so is it practical?

thanks for your time
