Moire issues and AA filter

There have been several sites that illustrate just how the AA filter works. Basically it takes the light and spreads it over several pixels so that the bayer filter doesn't interpret a sharp edge as a color. Removing the AA filter gives you the sharp edge but leaves you open to moire colors.

As I understand it, a RAW file gives you access to the pixel level data from the sensor. If that is the case, couldn't a postprocessing algorithm be written to simulate the AA filter in cases where it is needed? All you have to do is combine the pixels in a bayer block to effectively blur the image. It could be done selectively, i.e. only where the moire pattern is a problem, and leave the rest of the image alone for resolution.
