The action of the histogram sounds exactly like that on my elderly S9500 where the curve is calculated from the image displayed on the screen. This only bears a tenuous relationship with the image recorded in the photograph.

Play around with the thing in manual mode and this will be obvious. Alternatively, if you use one of the auto modes you can see the screen image darken and the histogram shift at exactly the same time as you hear the diaphram stop down a notch.

IMV, this is a marketing feature only and of no practical use when taking photos.
