Why is it that the focus offset varies?

it is my understanding (from online posts/articles) that lens focus offsets (if any) vary with focal length. so even if you were to correct at one end, it is possible that the other end might still show an offset.

Is it my camera's fault?

maybe. try the lenses with another camera

Would a camera and/or lens calibration fix it?

maybe. if the lenses/camera are within working tolerances of the manufacturer, they might say nothing is wrong with it.

Does the af microadjustment feature of more advanced cameras solve this?

sometimes. the microadjustment has limits (e.g. +/- 20). if the lens is offset beyond the limits (e.g. +/- 23), then the camera cannot do anything more.

there are many things that can lead to mis-focus -- subject/photographer motion, slow shutter speed, focus point selection, etc. try to eliminate all these factors (use focus chart, fast shutter speed, tripod, mirror lock-up, no image stabilization, select center focus point only, etc.) and post a photo.

hope this helps ...
