Canon 400d inconsistent focusing

Hi everyone

I have a canon 400d with efs 18-55mm is and i am very happy with both of them. But recently i got as a gift a brand new canon ef-s 55-250mm and last week i got a used sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 to replace the 18-55 kit lens and that is when all my problems started.

While using the 55-250 i noticed that pictures taken close to the wide open (55mm) end where badly front focused (2-4cm), but anything i shoot above 135mm would turn out crystal clear.

The sigma 17-70 also gave me a hard time. Anything i shoot around 35mm would be perfectly in focus, But at 17mm it would front focus (1cm) and above 50mm it would back focus (1-2cm)

On the other hand my old 18-55 did a great job in the whole zoom range.

To pinpoint the problem i downloaded a focusing chart and took many many many test shots.

Why is it that the focus offset varies? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is it my camera's fault? Would a camera and/or lens calibration fix it? Does the af microadjustment feature of more advanced cameras solve this?

Thanks

Canon EOS 400D (EOS Digital Rebel XTi / EOS Kiss Digital X)
