Right now anything over a couple of million pixels is fine for electronic use. This means small cameras and lenses are fine so long as you don't need to print.

But soon we will have 4K displays, and when that happens people are going to want high pixel count photos.

And all those pictures taken with low res cameras are going to look crummy.
