I think that in the past 10 years or so product costs have dropped hugely so It's not that hard design a new camera. And after they build up experience with writing code, that becomes easier too. The expensive stuff is probably the sensor, the lenses, and the custom silicon - and these things generally stick around for 2+ years. That's probably not a fast pace if you look at the semiconductor industry as a whole.

But these companies are probably happy to be in a higher pressure environment because there's more profit at stake. I believe the reduced product cycle length and pace of new features contribute to people upgrading their cameras quicker than ever before.

And with the rise of the smartphone camera taking over the low end, companies can streamline and focus on higher margin products. The only thing they don't like is releasing a dud in the marketplace.
