I hope its soon! Who started this myth?

I don't know who started it, but it was pushed very actively by DPReview for a number of years. It appeared time and time again in their reviews, the editor got an article in the NY Times pushing it, people got banned for arguing against it too vociferously. Phil Askey, the former editor, even published a completely faked up 'proof' of the myth, that was exposed by Emil Martinec. The blog remained on the site for a few more years, even though it had been exposed as fraudulent. Recently it was quietly deleted.

DPR put a lot of its credibility behind the myth, and until recently would not admit it was wrong. Not surprisingly many of their readers, who believe that simply because they are employed by a web site, these people know more than professors and professionals who research these things, came to accept the myth as the truth, even though no evidence (apart from Phil Askey's fake evidence) was ever offered to substantiate it.
