New Oly prime next month

If they made a 17 or 20mm @1.4 with great IQ and fast focusing like the 45 it would steal the thunder from the 20mm and probably pull some people from the 25mm if they kept it under $500.

I just got the [email protected] but if Oly had one I'd seriously have considered it.

no congrats to your response!

:)
You really have the face of making a false announcement on the basis of your private fantasies, as if they were a positive truth?

At least 43rumors relies on leaks from people who are close to the MFR, and tries to check them, but you have nothing.

Congrats, how does it feel to be a clown?

From my perspective a high quality larger aperture 17mm is the only lens still missing from m4/3 for me to consider it complete. 17mm f/1.4 about the size of the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 would be fine, but compromise a bit on the aperture (f/1.8) and make it about the size of the Panasonic 20mm and that would be perfect for me. Doubly perfect if they could work their magic and make it f/1.4 but closer in size to the 20mm than the 25mm.

17mm, f/2 or better, pancake form, and... 12mm-style snap focus!

it's all too easy to get caught up in our own personal wishes or 'needs' and a perceived mysteriousness about what Olympus (for example) will come out with next but I think there is actually less ambiguity than we think! the ep3 echoed the epl2, the epm echoed the xz1, the gx1 echoed the gf1, the g1x echoed the g12...

I agree the 17 needs to be updated, but they'll have to do more than weather seal it and improve optics/aperture. the 12mm's snap focus ring was universally praised and loved, makes sense for a wide angle street shooter, and seems to be a perfectly logical design to include in more and more lenses.

a smaller 25mm would be nice but doesn't make as much sense as a new 17, and especially given the PL was just released last year and the old 17... what, at m4/3 launch in 2009?

I think it was an interesting conversation on what we hope will come. Thanks OP.

If we hadn't expressed what we wanted we would have gotten a GF4 instead of the GX1

Thanks for the positivity, buddy.

You read it here first, folks...

None of the rumour sites are saying anything yet, but I'm predicting that a new Oly prime will be announced next month. It will be in the 17-25mm range, and around f1.8.
Looks like what we're getting are a 60/2.8 macro and a 75/1.8 fast tele, due by the end of the year.

No mention whatsoever of a mid-range prime.

Yep, looks like I was half-right and half-wrong. Right about the prime announcement, wrong about the focal length.

Seems to me there is a degree of co-operation between Panny and Oly, and if you want a fast, high quality standard lens, Panny have the 25mm f1.4.

The "kit" lens can always be had at a bargain price, so I wish Oly had something other than the dog slow 12-50 to offer.

Surely at 50mm f6.3 diffraction is already setting in? Can't see why this lens even has aperture blades, why would you ever stop it down?

Not on my wish list, not by several million miles.

My logic is this: both M43 manufacturers offer a prime or zoom lens option with their new cameras. Currently, the Oly PEN cameras come with either the 14-42 IIR or 17mm f2.8.

Now, Oly has already released a higher-grade $500 zoom for the weather-sealed body which is due to be announced on February 10. Clearly, the M. Zuiko 17mm f2.8 is a poor match for this as it is optically rather average and costs only $235.

What Oly needs is a $500 "normal" prime in the 17-25 range (equal to the classic 35-50mm lenses on full-frame cameras). The 45mm f1.8 is awesome, but a bit long for a kit lens. The 12mm f2 is too expensive and too wide.

So I'm predicting that Oly will try to compete with the best-selling Panasonic 20mm f1.7 with the focal lengths / apertures I've mentioned above.

Any thoughts on this?
