Canon CEO resigns.

Everyone's economies in their respective countries are just plain not where they need to be. Plain and simple. Even at $3000 USD or less, fewer people will be able to afford these cameras let alone the 5-8 thousand dollar cameras. Lets all hope we can be healthy at seventy whether we're working or not, right?

when he dies of old age it will probably be taken by some here as a sign that he comitted seppuku in response to canon's dreadful performance! ;)

Conspiracy theorists can create a story at the click of a shutter button! :D

Who said anything about any conspiracy? Have no idea what that was supposed to mean.

If they choose the "budget route", e.g. 5D3 for $2K, then that's one thing. But if that 22 MP 5D3 comes out at $3K, and doesn't beat the D800 at something besides pixel-for-pixel noise (as opposed to photo-for-photo noise), then it's not gonna be good times ahead for Canon.
Could it be that they plan to fight back with a 22MP 7.5fps "3D" and perhaps a bit later with a 46MP 3fps "5D3" (based on the 60D pixel)?

In any case, they have to announce their intentions very soon to prevent long term Canon users such as myself from switching. (I placed my D800 preorder yesterday...)

If the rumored 22 meg 7.5 fps 61 point focus is true no reason to shelve it. Sounds like a great all around camera. D800 is a very good camera but if the rumor about 5d3 is true it is what allot have asked for a, 3 series camera.
True the D800 can do 6 fps but only in crop mode plus need battery grip.

Now if 5D3 was just a FF 7D then they either need it priced at $1999 no matter what meg sensor is in it or shelve it like you say.

Canon needs to announce something soon. Or see alot of sales from canon users go to the D800. They have a month as I doubt anything will be delivered before that, can always cancel a pre-order.

As far as CEO if he is retiring why say resign? Plus yes he is 70 but new guy is 75 .

Resign sounds like he is gone because of bad performance were retired sounds like hey iam old time to relax.
the rumored 22 MP 5D3 (if true) needs to be shelved immediately even if it takes longer to get a relevant cam to market.

I am too upside down right now in the D3x to think about dumping it for the D800, but I would love a 30+ MP 5D2 replacement.

Would be silly to think that the D800 had anything to do with it, but I don't think it's silly to think it might hint that Canon's been sleeping while others have been busy.

.....seriously though, as a 5d2 owner, there is not much to improve on it, 36mp D800 or no 36mp D800 being announced, considering the 5D2's age in a fast moving market, it is aging exceptionally well I think.
You're not very demanding, are you?

The 5D2's main qualities are that it is full-frame, and has 21MP, which was close to the best until the D800 came along. The 5D2 is a sub-standard camera in many ways, and shines only in ideal conditions.
Geez, I've shot high school football at night under horrid conditions and I've done pretty well with mine. Clearly, it's been trumped by the D800 but sub standard? Nah.

Actually the president resigns, and the CEO takes over as president. Since the CEO is responsible for running day to day operations, at least there is a change in that position. Canon, in response to the recession, introduced new models that were significantly more expensive than the old. For example, the 7D was a lot more expensive than the 50D it replaced but still offers a cropped sensor. Raising prices in the middle of a recession is not a good idea, and Canon pays for it. Its revenue outlook is down, and that is why there is a change at the top.

John, I think it is the manner in which I shoot, & the subject matter, which does not hilite the areas where the 5d2 may be considered by some as 'sub-standard'.

......for example, maybe if I was a pro or even semi-pro sports photographer that was using the 5d2, then yeah, it is not the best tool around - basically, the person who has bought a 5d2 to do lots of sports/action work, has probably bought the wrong camera for them.

It is sports & action which is where I perceive teh 5d2 to be at its weakest - not saying that it can't be used for this, just that it does not play to its strengths - the AF is not so clever & advanced & the FPS a tad on the slow side for this use.

I've spent years with manual film camera's where you just used the central focus 'assist' (microprism & split screen aids - anyone remember those? ;-) ) AND either manual frame advance or modest fps motor drives 2.5 fps jobs......& when I shot sport or action I had to pre-empt the action - focus on a spot & pan the target until it hit that spot & shoot at that point & continue through following the action......the 5d2 is not sub-standard compared to this! ;-)

Canon is a big company that makes all sorts of stuff, I saw this a few days ago but I don't think it has too much to do with cameras. Someone can check this but I think that cameras are not a huge contributor to Canon's bottom line (I heard 10% from a Canon copier sales guy a while back) and I think that the camera BU is doing reasonably well.

Indeed
Management shake-ups are rarely a good sign.
From the Daily Tech article:

While the company originally aimed to bring the next generation up to take the helm, recent troubles have changed its mind. For instance, Canon was affected by a weak economy and a strong yen, which hurts the camera company because it makes 80 percent of its revenue overseas. It also recently took a hit after the floods in Thailand temporarily closed one of its printer plants.

"We are now working on training our younger leaders, but we couldn't immediately find anyone suitable for the president role," said Toshizo Tanaka, chief financial officer of Canon.

Seems they decided to skip at least one, maybe two generations. I think that -even in a Japanese company- you'd expect at least the CEO to be not much older than 60.

This problem will have been brewing for a couple of years - and may yet result in an in-fight.

Could it be that they plan to fight back with a 22MP 7.5fps "3D" and perhaps a bit later with a 46MP 3fps "5D3" (based on the 60D pixel)?
If this is indeed correct, would it be good enough?

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d3.html

5D X
45MP (With a pixel size similar to the power shot G1X)
61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but simpler)
3.4 fps, 100-6400 (50-12800)
1 Digic 5+ Digic 4

5D mk III
22MP
61 points AF (Similar to the 1DX but but simpler)
6.9 fps, ISO 100-25600(50-51200)
1 Digic 5+ Digic 4
Best HD video quality of any EOS camera
Both over $3k

Kind of what I was hoping they'd do (although, honestly, speaking just for myself, I'd prefer the 22 MP sensor if it were "substantially" more efficient).

Yep.
