I've got experience with it. Nice lens. I suggest spending an extra $100 and getting the 100-400. It's on sale right now. It has close focus capability,

Maximum magnification of the 100-400 is 0.20x
Maximum magnification of the 300 is 0.24x

Advantage 300.

as well as IS,

Both lenses have IS, so this is not an advantage over the 300.

and you get 400mm when you want it without fiddling with an extender.

It is a push pull zoom and heavier, but a nice do it all zoom.

Some people don't like the push/pull. I have both lenses, and I find the 100-400 to be much bulkier/heavier. The 300 is much easier to handle.

I have never used one,

I find it odd, then, that you are recommending it.

but the utility of that zoom is appealing. And it is a lot lighter weight than packing around all the primes that it would take to cover that focal length range.

True. But what is more important, the weight of the camera bag, or the weight of the camera during use? For me, it's the latter.

I don't think you can use the 2x extender with the 300f/4 on the 60D and have auto focus without taping pins.

Nor can you use a 1.4x extender with the 100-400 ... in the focal length that matters.
