T3i does not fire AF-Assist flash in 'creative modes'?

Hello, all. I just purchased a T3i to replace our T1i--wanted the improved video performance for the more active ages our kids are now in.

I noticed something odd. With the flash popped up, normally the camera will fire small bursts when performing AF in low light (the T1i did this all the time, works great). The T3i wasn't doing it--I normally shoot in 'P' mode. A little fiddling shows that it works in the preset modes (except sports and 'no flash'), but does not work in the 'creative modes' P, Tv, Av, M, and A-DEP.

Anyone know why they did this? Maybe I just have some menu setting wrong? Is this pilot error? I really would like to have AF-Assist flash in 'P' mode.

This is pretty much a "send it back, it doesn't work" kind of situation rather than a 'oh, those funny Canon guys and their odd firmware quirks!'

Please tell me I've got something set wrong. Firmware is the current 1.0.2--updated from the 1.0.1 it came with. Nothing else unusual I can think of.

Any help would be appreciated.
