Many people, including Thom Hogan for example, recommend leaving VR off and only turning it on when it is needed. The reason being that VR can actually hurt photos at worst, and do absolutely nothing at best, at higher shutter speeds.

I tried to get any evidence of it but have yet to find a single example. It apperas that there may actually be no penalty other than battery charge to leaving VR on.

Hi Mako,

Perhaps it all depends on how we define "faster" shutter speeds. At least in the 55-200 lens I seem to have found a zone where the VR seems to do some harm some of the time (that being somewhere around 1/40-1/100). That being said it seems to do harm about as often as it helps for me at that range (again my results showing that my worst and best shots were with VR off, and the VR ON shots always seemed to give me middle of the road results at that range - at least on the two lenses that I have tried).

With regard fast shutter speeds (faster than twice focal length) I've seen no harm using VR. With the 18-105, the area around 1/200s is hit or miss as you suggest. Not the case with my other VR lens though.
